Based on the great work ‘Abhigyan Shankutalam’ written by Kalidas, people are liking it very much. Mixed reactions are being given by the film critics.
In the last few years, there has been a widespread impact of films based on mythology. The tradition that started with the film ‘Bahubali’ has now reached ‘Shakuntalam’. Directed by Gunasekhar, the Telugu film ‘Shakuntalam’ is based on Kalidasa’s great work ‘Abhigyana Shankutalam’. In this the love story of Shakuntala and Dushyant is shown. In this film, actors like Dev Mohan, Ananya Nagalla, Prakash Raj, Gautami, Madhu, Sachin Khedekar, Kabir Bedi, Jishu Sengupta and Kabir Duhan Singh are in important roles along with South Cinema’s famous actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu. Along with this, Allu Arha, daughter of ‘Pushpa: The Rise’ fame superstar Allu Arjun, has also made her debut with this film. The screenplay and dialogues of the film are jointly written by Gunasekhar and Sai Madhav Burra. People are liking the film very much. The film is getting mixed response from the critics.
People on social media are calling ‘Shakuntalam’ a tremendous film. Praising its grandeur. A user wrote on Twitter, “What an amazing film Gunasekhar has made. The experience of watching it has been wonderful. VFX and special visual effects are excellent. According to the story of the film, the costumes of all the characters are looking impressive. The 3D experience is unique and amazing. Samantha Ruth Prabhu is looking very beautiful in the character of Shakuntala.” Ashif Sheikh writes, “Such a film was expected from a director like Gunasekhar. It was only after watching the trailer of the film that it was understood that a grand film is going to be made. Had a lot of fun while watching it. The music and background score of the film is amazing. Mani Sharma should be praised for this. After ‘Bahubali’ and ‘RRR’, I have seen such a grand film after a long time.
In Google Film Review, Tanuja gave the film 5 stars and wrote, “It is a must watch film. I have never seen such an excellent film with authentic story and amazing visuals. Samantha Ruth Prabhu has carried the entire film on her shoulders. He is the best choice for Shakuntala. No one else can take his place. I am speechless after seeing the lovely Allu Arha in the character of Bharat. He is a born superstar. The extraordinary direction of Gunasekhar Garu has brought alive Kalidas’s ‘Abhigyan Shakuntalam’. Best wishes to the entire team for presenting this masterpiece love story of Indian history to the world.” Vijay Kishore writes, “In my opinion, SS Rajamouli is not able to direct any film of this genre as well as Gunasekhar. Has done. He has presented this mythological story with great sensitivity.
Film journalist Manoj Vashisht writes, “This story is not new to the Indian audience. The biggest challenge is to present such a story on screen. Imagination has to create such scenes, which will keep the interest of the viewer. But Shakuntala is weak in this matter. Written-directed by Gunasekhar, the visuals of Shakuntalam look very colourful, but they do not have that edge to not let the viewer move. Like Disney’s fantasy films, they have been groomed and made real. Jungle, animals and birds have been created through VFX. However, due to weak VFX at some places, the visuals have not been able to leave an impact. The problem with Hindi dubbing is that there is no balance in the language. At some places the language of the dialogues does not match with the mythological theme of the film. The film is very slow before the interval. There is no depth in the scenes of love between Shakuntala and Dushyant, for which this story is immortal. Samantha has done her part well, while Dev Mohan has also tried his best in the role of Dushyant, but both do not leave a mark together. It seems that due to the focus on technology, the tightening points of the story have been left behind. The presence of Allu Arjun’s daughter Arha has been effective. This is Arha’s first film.
Film critic Prashant Jain has written, “Nowadays the craze for mythology films has increased among the audience. Keeping this in view, director Gunasekhar has made the film Shakuntalam based on ‘Abhigyan Shakuntalam’. He made the film on grand sets like ‘Bahubali’. Watching a movie in 3D is a great experience. Its cinematography is also excellent. In the matter of script, he needed to work a little more. The screenplay of the film is also weak. Based on the epic, this film could have been made with a better script. If the director would have paid attention to these mistakes, he might have been able to make a better film. In this, Samantha Ruth Prabhu is very solid on the screen in the role of Shakuntala. Her beauty is worth seeing on the screen. Dev Mohan has also played the role of Dushyant brilliantly. The rest of the actors have also done a decent job. Telugu superstar Allu Arjun’s daughter Allu Arha has made a cameo debut in this film in the role of Bharat. If you are fond of watching mythological films, then you can watch this film in the theatre.
