Box office report of Ponniyin Selvan 2 may demoralize Mani Ratnam!

‘PS 2’, the second part of veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s film ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ has been released in theatres. Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Karthi, and Trisha starrer this film has earned around 50 crores in two days. But this collection is very less as compared to the first part of the film. This could be a matter of concern for Mani Ratnam, who is excited by the bumper and widespread success of ‘PS 1’.

The film ‘PS 1’, based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s novel ‘Ponniyan Selvan’, was released in theaters last year. This film did well at the box office. Made in a budget of Rs 250 crore, the film did a worldwide business of around Rs 490 crore. This is the reason why Mani Ratnam, excited by the bumper and widespread success of this film, immediately announced its next second part. Within just a few months of the release of the first part, the second part has been released. The film ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’ has been released in theaters across the country on 28 April. It is performing better than Bollywood movies at the box office. But if its earnings are compared with the first part of this film, then the results are discouraging. The collection of ‘PS 2’ is less than the film ‘PS 1’.

The film ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’ has earned around Rs 50 crore in two days after its release. The opening day collection of this film was 24 crores. In this, 18.52 crores have been earned from Tamil version, 1.7 crores from Hindi, 1.35 crores from Malayalam, 2.4 crores from Telugu and 3 lakhs from Kannada. The second day collection of the film is Rs 26.2 crore. In this, 20.26 crores have been earned from Tamil version, 2.3 crores from Hindi, 1.1 crores from Malayalam, 2.5 crores from Telugu and 4 lakhs from Kannada. In this way, the film has earned Rs 50.20 crore in two days. In this, the highest earning was Rs 38.78 crore from the Tamil version, while the lowest earning was Rs 7 lakh from the Kannada version. At the same time, the first part of the film ‘PS 1’ earned Rs 65.35 crore in the first two days, with the highest collection being Rs 58.55 crore from the Tamil version.

The film ‘PS 1’ had joined the 100 crore club in its first weekend itself. Its total earning was Rs 110 crores. But looking at the pace of earning of the second part, it does not seem that this film will be able to earn so much money in the first weekend. More than that, immediately after the first weekend, it has to be given a Monday test. Due to this day being a working day, the earnings of most of the films are unexpectedly reduced. In such a situation, the Monday collection of ‘PS 2’ can be less than Rs 10 crore. Which can remain low continuously till next Friday. After this, once again a jump in earnings can be seen on Saturday and Sunday. In this way, there are only next 15 days, in which the film has a chance to earn. Because on June 16, the much-awaited film ‘Adipurush’ of Bahubali fame actor Prabhas, directed by Om Raut, is going to be released.

If we compare the collection of ‘PS 2’ with Salman Khan’s recent release film ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’, then its performance can be considered better. This Bollywood film, released on 21 April, has earned Rs 90 crores in the last seven days. Its opening day collection was Rs 13.5 crore. The film has earned 25.75 crores on the second day, 26.61 crores on the third day, 10.17 crores on the fourth day, 6.12 crores on the fifth day, 4.5 crores on the sixth day and 3.5 crores on the seventh day. If the trend of the film’s collection is seen, it is continuously falling down. In such a situation, there is very little chance that this film will be able to recover its cost. Its performance will also be affected due to ‘PS2’, as people have the option of watching the new film. The bigger thing is that Mani Ratnam’s film is getting better word of mouth publicity than Salman’s film.

Let us inform that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Sobhita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lakshmi, Sharat Kumar and Prakash Raj are in lead roles in veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s film ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’. The screenplay and dialogues of the film are written by Mani Ratnam along with B. Jayamohan and E. Kumaravel. After watching this film, there is positive response from the audience and critics alike. Everyone is praising the strong acting of Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Trisha in one voice. However, in the first part of the film, the slow pace of the story has also annoyed some people. But overall people are liking the film. Due to the success of the first part of this film, people were eagerly waiting for its second part. This is the reason why the makers felt that it would get success like ‘Bahubali 2’, which has not happened.
